Summary:

Adventure wasn’t something Lorelei Alundra was interested in. Gifted with two otherworldly talents for singing and healing, she’s always shied away from her gifts and the spotlight, preferring quiet anonymity, over attention and fame. But when she meets the enigmatic Adrius, with his dark and dangerous mystique and eyes that peer into her soul, her uneventful life becomes irrevocably altered.

Adrius turns up in every one of her classes and knows more about her than any newcomer should. Including the condition of her mother who is suffering from a mysterious illness. Accepting his offer to help leads her into a terrifying and thrilling world, where Elves are even hotter than Legolas, and Faeries.... are nothing like Tinkerbell. Lose the butterfly wings and add a tattoo. The two magical beings are fire and ice opposites. One Lorelei can’t help falling for, and the other she's compelled to be with.

Now she’s trapped in their world, expected to prevent a war between witches and faeries, or forfeit her mother’s life. Nothing is what it seems. Not her family. Not the Fey. Not even Adrius, whose feelings for her balance precariously between danger and desire.

As secrets unravel and unsettling truths are revealed, Lorelei must fight to save much more than her mother’s life. One mistake could put the fate of his world— and her soul, in jeopardy.

But hey, no pressure… right.

Fire and Ice was one of those books where I saw the cover and went "Sign up NOW" when I got the tour invitation (I didn't even bother to read what it was about) I just saw the cover and HAD to read it. Which let's be honest here, happens a lot. Sometimes the book matched the epic cover, other times it doesn't. This time however, the gorgeous cover totally matched the wonderful story. Plus the author is a fellow Ontarion so I had to sign up for the tour for that reason too!

While the book was exceptionally well written and addictive. I have to admit that I thought that the first 30 pages were a bit slow for my liking, but it wasn't anything that troubled me over much because in a way it made me want to read more just to get to the real heart of the story.

I enjoyed the way the book was written a lot. There was quite a bit of character and world building going on and the author's attention to detail was amazing. I know sometimes too much detail can be annoying but that was so not the case in this one. I thought she did a really good job in detailing the things that needed to be detailed without going overboard.

The story was an interesting one. I haven't read a book about a healer in some time and I really like the whole healer thing in novels and I wish a few more author's would have characters like Lorelie. I thought that Lorelie was a very realistic character. I enjoyed the fact that like a real person, she had quirks, such as being a healer with a low tolerance for the sight of blood. I thought she was really relatable and I was rooting for her throughout the whole book because she was just plain awesome. I liked the way the author mixed some magic, mystery a wee bit of romance and a whole lot of other stuff going on that I was unsure of at first but came to enjoy.

Overall, I thought that the writing was really good, but the story did sputter a bit at the beginning and in the middle. I enjoyed how the author set the world up for the next book in the series and I'm looking forward to reading book two in the trilogy when it is release. I thought this was a really well rounded YA novel apart from a few small issues.

I would recommend this novel to fans of YA novels especially those with a magical element, romance and mystery all mixed into one, with a likable heroine that's really endearing.

  3. Hi Kimberly,

Another thumbs up for the cover. Although I do really try my best not to judge a book by its cover, in this case, it is difficult not to.

I am a fan of descriptive writing, so this book sounds right up my street, although at nearly 500 pages, it is quite a lengthy read and would need a good strong storyline to hold my attention.

It seems that you genuinely enjoyed most aspects of the story and the authors writing style and have published an excellent and objective review.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Yvonne
